Ooh. Aah.

Today is the fourth of July. On this day in 1776, the first Continental Congress of the new United States of America approved a Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. It was a bold, risky, dangerous move ... but in spite of the odds against the revolutionaries, that July day gave rise to a great nation that changed the entire world.

This evening my family and I celebrated the anniversary of that day by standing in a Wal-Mart parking lot with a bunch of slack-jawed rednecks, watching gobs of aluminum, magnesium, charcoal and titanium explode in the sky.

There's a continuity in that, but it's faaaar to complex to explain to those who don't understand it instinctively.

Happy Fourth, everyone.

I was at my sisters house which is a few miles away from where you were and we could here the music playing. Man that must have been loud there.

BTW, I feel like a big fat tick after eating all of that macaroni salad.

It was Canada Day on the 1st, and the whole of downtown was packed with people in red and white clothes or wrapped in the flag, buskers, bands, pipers, trampolinists, stilt-walkers, unicyclists, hucksters and about a kajillion strollers.

Emily and her fiancé came over and we walked up to Parliament Hill, listened to some good music and watched some of the circussy stuff, bought ourselves tinsel red and white garlands with long trailing ribbons and sat for hours in a nice bar at the heart of things, drinking bellinis and people-watching. Later, Dave and I went out and stood in the street to watch about half an hour's worth of spectacular fireworks. There were hundreds of people at our corner, which was about a mile from the site, and when it was over, everybody clapped and went home. Very satisfying. Very Canadian.

Although Jones Beach canceled their show due to rough seas (wimps) my neighbors put on a fantastic show that our impromptu block party greatly enjoyed. Stop by and check out the pics :)

It's so damn hot here that we just took the fireworks out of the box and as we set each one on the pavement it would go off by itself within a few seconds.

..not really, but it IS hot here

how funny...i love your description of what you did in the evening.

you're absolutly right...there is continuity in that.

I see it.
