An Interesting Phone Call

Today I got an e-mail from a producer (I suppose he's a producer) at E! Entertainment Television. He sent me his phone number and asked me to call him regarding the item I wrote about Christine Chubbuck, the Florida newscaster who killed herself on the air in 1974.

The fellow from E! wanted to know if I could give him sources for the the quotes and specific information in my story. Apparently, E! is working on a feature about Christine Chubbuck. I don't know if it's to be anything more than a five-minute segment on a news program, but I was glad to help.

Unfortunately, all of the information I have is drawn from the two sources I sited at the end of my post about Christine. All I did, really, was work my own prose around information from Sally Quinn's 1974 article about the incident.

Nonetheless, I'm surprised by how many hits my Christine Chubbuck article gets on a daily basis. It's currently my most popular single item.

And it's neat to have played a small role, however incidental, in the production of a national television piece about Christine Chubbuck. Her story is sad and moving. I'm surprised that it isn't better known.

Hey! Great job! I agree that that was one very interesting post. I'd been only vaguely familiar with the case. The info was interesting but you are also a seriously good writer. I'm not surprised E! found you and contacted you.

Hey ! I love Christine Chubbuck and have been trying to find more info on her,I even took a trip to Sarasoto and was able to see the studio!Wow!!Thats were it happened! Anyway by people like yourself writing these articles we are keeping her memory alive.I would have been her friend and been there for her if I had known her,Bless her heart! And yours as well ! And Im still curouse about the film footage,An old guy who workrd there when it happened told me he was sure that the footage caught the actual shooting and not just the audio, My question is were is it? Ans why cant we see it? I want to see what was going through this girls mind when she did this I mean did she look nervouse? It eats me up!!! Where is this video???

For Anonymous:

Since you would want more information on Christine, if you contact Bonnie in Records at the Sarasota County Sheriff's Dept. in Sarasota, FL. and ask for the transcripts from Christine's co-workers interviewed by an officer on the morning of July 15, 1974 after Chris shot herself, you would find comments and information that wasn't in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. It isn't expensive: under $10. for 46 pages. They take check or money order; not credit card (they're not set up for credit or debit cards). It's part of the Freedom of Information Act.

Yes, Christine was nervous. She was groping for hair just before she committed suicide. It's mentioned by a female co-worker/camera-person, "Shay", who is listed in the above transcripts. The videotape, which was the size of a manhole cover in 1974, was given to the family; and the station director/owner. Yes, in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, a woman reporter was having breakfast at home; and saw Christine's long dark hair fly upward after she shot herself from behind her right ear, and saw Christine's head fall forward violently, hitting the desk. Then Christine's torso slowly slid down the desk, and she fell on her right side on the carpeted floor next to her chair. That last part wasn't seen by the viewer, but by the Sheriff's Dept. (mentioned in the transcripts). So the viewer *did* see the quick action, before the camera trained on Christine was cut.

Christine's brother, Gregory, (the only of the three kids still living -- Timothy, the interior designer, died in the mid-1990s; Peg, the mother, passed of natural causes in mid-1990s; and Chris' dad, George, is in a rest home in Los Angeles), has more recent information on Christine's health at the time of her death; which will be revealed on E! Entertainment.

I like Chris too; though I never knew her until reading the newspaper in Toledo, Ohio in 1974. She was tall at 5'9" with waist-length raven hair; brilliant, a scuba diver and environmentalist. Christine drove a yellow VW bug and liked Roberta Flack's music. I believe Roberta's 'new' (at that time) 1973 cassette tape was in Christine's tote bag on July 15, 1974.

I would have liked to see the outside of the former Channel 40, WXLT, on Lawton Drive, too. Were you able to see the original Channel 40 on Lawton Drive, off of Clark Rd? Because the new Channel 40, WWSB, has a new updated state-of-art location in Sarasota. After WXLT was briefly a radio station, it's now a dance club. The upstairs part of Channel 40, WXLT, was the reception area. Does anyone have a photo of WXLT?

It won't be until around March 2007 that E! Entertainment will air the half-hour segment on Christine. It was supposed to air around Christmas, but had some unforeseen delays.

Look for the series called "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" for the Christine Chubbuck segment on E! Entertainment!

The 15 minute segment (with another 15 minute segment of an unrelated author, James Frey) of Christine Chubbuck will air on E! Entertainment on FEBRUARY 26, 2007 at 7:30 PM and 10:30 PM; and before and after those times during that day. Check your local times and listings.

Finally! The episode we've been waiting for! An April 29, 1974 color tape of Christine interviewing two guests regarding opening a hospital in Sarasota, will show Chris on her Suncoast Digest show. She's wearing a blue turtleneck sweater with loud plaid slacks. At least we get to hear her voice and see how she interviews. The attorneys for E! Entertainment finally got approval for Christine's videotape to air. Interviews with others on Christine, and some old 1974 footage of inside WXLT's newsroom included.

Just thought I would like everyone to know this recent information who has visited this site.

Everyone who can Tivo it or tape it somehow should do so, for posterity. We don't know when E! will air Christine's segment again.

*MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2007* is coming up soon for Christine Chubbuck's 15 minute segment on E! Entertainment's, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." It's on at 10:30 PM and 7:30 PM (PST/EST); and on at other times, before and after. Check your local listings.

The unfortunate title was previously called that for other segments, and though even staffers at E! wanted to rename it; it had been reverted back to its original title.

Oops! It's "air" not "hair" -- as in "Yes, Christine was nervous. She was groping for air."

I know I will have a DVD taping of this segment for posterity (personal home use). I've waited to hear Christine's voice, see how she presented herself; and the way she interviewed for almost 33 years!

Thanks for listening. :)
