Three Saturday Quickies
Three quick things:
- A Prayer Request
Just a quick prayer request to my Christian and Jewish friends. In the time I've been employed at the papermill I've made only a handful of friends. The best of them is Otis. Another was an older guy named Leon who retired in 2004 and then up and died two months later. Yet another is a guy named Reggie Carter. Reggie is the kind of guy that everyone likes. You can't help it. He's just a great guy. Anyway, Reggie had a heart attack last week and he's off from work right now. Please pray for his recovery. - Fat Guy Warning
Consider this a warning to all of my fellow fat white guys: When you're listening to the Black Crowes, no matter how much you are into it, no matter how much you're "feelin' it," and no matter how much you're moved by the music, do not attempt to dance around like Chris Robinson does. For one thing, you're going to just throw out a hip or something. Especially if you have a bad back to begin with. For another thing, your wife is just going to laugh at you. Trust me on this. Just sit there and tap your foot and grin. No good can come of dancing. - Flew Through Watchmen
I finished Watchmen and it was outstanding. I don't see me ever calling it my favorite comic series or graphic novel, but it's hard to argue with those who claim that it's the best ever written. It's just so complex, so dense and demanding. The ending is both ambiguous and compelling, leaving the reader to draw his own conclusions. Like the best works of fiction, I felt dumbfounded and even overwhelmed by the climax. I wasn't sure what to make of it, I wasn't sure if I understood it, and I've been totally unable to shake it.
I read this at the Wikipedia entry about Watchmen:A film adaptation has been attempted several times, with none reaching even the casting phase. When Terry Gilliam was attached to direct in the late 1980s he met with Moore and after Gilliam asked "How would you make a film of 'Watchmen'?" Moore responded "Don't."
My gut reaction is that I totally agree with Moore. You just can't make a movie out of this. It could only possibly work in the medium it was created in and created for. It would be like trying to make a movie out of Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G minor; or like trying to make a movie out of Jackson Pollock's Galaxy. Frank Zappa once said (I've been told) that "talking about music is like dancing about architecture." I think that general idea applies here. Trying to make a movie out of Watchmen is a terrible idea.

Are you saying that your wifey was mocking your cool choreography?
I'm sure that your moves weren't funny looking at all.
