Couric's Closers, Papal Panache, Marital Muslim Mistreatment, Etc...
- Katie Signing Off
Scrappleface has the list of possible sign-off lines that Katie Couric is considering for wrapping up each edition of the CBS Evening News. My favorites include:- “Well, there’s 22 minutes of your life you can never get back.”
- “I’m Katie Couric, and that’s the way it is at the DNC.”
- “I hope to see you tomorrow night, because all I see tonight is the TelePromTer.”
- A Dirty Job… But Somebody's Gotta Do It
In Acworth, Georgia, Brandon Edwards, a 17-year-old high school football player, and another young man were arrested for trespassing in an apartment complex. During the arrest, Edwards and the other trespasser punched the police officer (Jim Vanalstan) and tried to wrestle away his gun. Also during the arrest, the mother of Brandon Edwards, Valerie Edwards, kicked the arresting officer in the groin and tried in other ways to interfere with the arrest. She ended up going to jail in handcuffs, too.
Sounds pretty cut and dry, right? Nope. Because officer Jim Vanalstan is a white man and Ms. Edwards and her hoodlum son are black.“This man is no police officer,” said Valerie Edwards. “He’s a racist in disguise.”
Edwards is filing an official complaint with the Acworth Police Department. She says her son Brandon was beaten up during his arrest, and she was handcuffed and charged for simply asking if he was all right. She says she was also humiliated during the arrest.
If you're interested, the police department has made Officer Vanalstan's arrest record public.11Alive News did get a look at Vanalstan’s arrests. In six months with the Acworth Police Department, he has arrested 46 blacks and 96 whites.
Yep. No doubt about it. He's clearly a racist. Why, I bet you this bigoted cracker doesn't even own any Tupac albums. - The Return Of Personal Accountability
Young people everywhere are looking at the mess that the previous generation has made of things and… guess what? They are learning from their parents mistakes. With regard to abortion there is a lot of good news popping up here and there:In 2004, UCLA's annual poll of U.S. college freshmen found student support for legal abortion at its lowest level (54 percent) since the poll began in 1977. Glamour magazine last year noted the "mysterious disappearance of young pro-choice women," pointing to a 2003 CBS/New York Times poll that found only 35 percent of women 18-29 responded that "abortion should be available to anyone who wants it"; in 1993, it had been 50 percent.
That article, by Kathryn Lopez, goes on to detail nation-wide car-wash fundraiser organized by young people to benefit the Pro-Life cause:This Sept. 16, young Americans will be getting their hands dirty. No aborted-fetus placards, no empty rhetoric; just good old-fashioned neighborly support for a member of the community. And when you ask them why they're raising their rags to your windows, you might be as impressed and encouraged as I am. Almost 34 years after Roe, we might be getting somewhere -- at least if these kids have anything to say about it.
These kids these days!
Wow. Wouldn't it be great if the next generation turned out to be as resolved, dependable and straight-arrow as our grandparents were? Just remember, kids… don't trust anybody over 50. - Don't Judge The Post By It's Name
I stumbled across a new blog (new to me) today called Josiah Concept Ministries, written by a young protestant about his faith journey. One post about , entitled "Cult?" about the Catholic Church, caught my eye. Imagine that. Anyway, rather than reading a Catholic-bashing post, I was surprised and happy to read a thoughtful and provocative dissertation by a young man who seems to be earnestly trying to find answers. this post in particular seems to primarily concern one issue… how can Catholics accept everything that the Church teaches us and still "be persuaded in our own minds," as Romans 14:5 instructs us? I, of course, left a comment with regard to my own answer to the question. Check out Josiah Concept Ministries. There's some good stuff there. - You Don't Have To Be Drunk To Listen To Nickelback…
... but I'm sure it helps. And speaking of drunks and Nickelback, their lead singer, Chad "Brian Adams" Kroeger is in the news in a bad way:
The frontman for the popular rock group Nickelback intends to plead not guilty to two alleged drinking-and-driving charges, his lawyer says.
The drunk-driving case against Chad Kroeger, whose real name is Chad Turton, was adjourned to Sept. 15 in provincial court in this city southeast of Vancouver.
Kroeger, whose band was scheduled to play Friday night in Houston, is charged with impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level over .08.
Kroeger's statement to the press, released through his lawyer Marvin Stern, was as repetitive and simplistic as his lyrics are:“I want to make it very clear that Chad Kroeger does not condone drinking and driving,” Stern told reporters outside the courtroom.
“The message he wanted me to impart to you very clearly is that this is not a situation where he is condoning drinking and driving. ”
Stern went on to say that driving and drinking isn't something that Kroeger condones… and that, furthermore, Kroeger neither drives while condoning drinking, nor does he drink while condoning driving.Only a couple of fans showed up, as did two representatives from Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
The president of SCALAB, Southern Conservatives Against Lame-Ass Bands, elected not to attend the hearing, opting instead to simply mock Kroeger at his blog. - Two Cute Videos

If you had attended the Islamic Society of North America's recent convention, you'd have had the opportunity to check out a seminar on how, when, and why to beat your wife. You'd also have learned, of course, that the whuppin' is for her own good:This session will discuss the following: understanding the context of revelation (asbaab al nuzuul) for this verse. Emphasis will be focused on understanding the correct meaning of the verse, with specific attention given to the words qiwamah, nushuz, and daraba as well as to understand how this verse is to be applied as a protection for women, not as an abuse.
Now, go ahead, left-wing feminist nut-cases… explain to me again how it's Christianity that's a terrible, patriarchal religion designed to suppress women?

Re: Katie Couric: I was flipping stations tonight and caught her sign off. Let's just say, I *knew* they would find an excuse for her not to sit *behind* the desk fairly quickly.
I've got The Path to 9-11 set to record. It is funny to watch how the other side is reacting now, when they were lapping up all the publicity surrounding Michael Moore's non-factual movie before.

I saw those laughing babies on America's Funniest Videos awhile back. I LOVE it!!
