Goonies, Gibson, Gags, Etc
- The Gooniship Of The Rings
My buddy Otis has started blogging in earnest, and his first in-depth post about the shameless way that Peter Jackson ripped off The Goonies is a must-read. - He's a Christian. He's not Christ.
The secular left's celebration of Mel Gibson's arrest for driving while intoxicated is in full swing. I could list a bunch of examples… but all you need to do to find them yourself is go to Google Blog Search, type in Mel Gibson Drunk and start reading all the hateful things that the secularists are saying.
In case you've been in a cave for the past few days, here's the story in a nutshell… Mel Gibson was arrested for driving while drunk. During the arrest he misbehaved terribly. He was belligerent toward the cops and is said to have made several anti-Semitic remarks. He also apparently bolted toward his car and tried to drive away at one point. All of which makes him an easy target. Even big Mel Gibson fans like me are tempted to pull up Windows Paint and throw together a quick parody picture, like the one below:
You can fill in your own caption. I considered "Go back to your police station! Go back and tell them that Gibson is FREE!"... but decided that wasn't funny enough.
Gibson has issued a statement about the incident, which I found at the American Papist. It reads as follows:"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the LA County Sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person. I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said. Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
As a Christian and a Mel Gibson fan (particularly a fan of his masterpiece), here's what I guess I should do:- Pray for Mel Gibson and his family.
- Accept that he's a human, like me… a sinner, like me… and that his sins are no better or worse in the eyes of God than mine are.
- Ignore the secularists who will celebrate this difficult time in the lives of Mel Gibson and his family.
- Wait it out, the same way we had to wait it out when the leftists were all so giddy over Rush Limbaugh's drug arrest.
- Use this as an opportunity to examine my own sins… including my own hypocrisy. Have there been times in the past when I've done what the secularists are doing now? Have there been times when I have celebrated the problems experienced by my ideological opponents? I could probably comb my own blog and find a hundred examples of me doing just that. How can I use this as a way to stop myself from doing that in the future?
- Did I mention, pray for Mel Gibson and his family?
- Rhodester Brings The Funny. As Usual.
Before I pass on Rhodester's joke, I'm going to tell one of my own. Nobody will think this is funny but me… but if you're familiar with my feelings about labor unions, you'll at least understand why this joke cracks me up:
A teacher is explaining to her children that they might miss a lot of school in the next few weeks because of the pending teacher's strike. She goes into a lot of detail about organized labor unions and really tries to win the kids over. After her speech, she starts asking the children how they feel about unions.
One by one the children confirm for the teacher that they are pro-labor union... until one little girl raises her hand and says "Well, my parents have always said that unions do more harm than good, so I guess I'm generally opposed to labor unions."
"WHAT??!" the teacher bellows. "Why should you let your parents decide for you? What if your parents were total MORONS! What then?"
"Well," the little girl responds, "I suppose I'd be pro-union."
(As you might expect, that joke goes over soooooo well at work.)
Anyway, what prompted that was a joke that Rhodester told recently, a joke he knew that I'd really appreciate.
Rhodester has also brought the funny with some great videos, including a Britney Spears parody that made me laugh out loud several times. - Summer Reading, Autumn Viewing
Pastor Scott has me interested in a new movie, and the book that inspired it. I've never read anything by P.D. James, but her book The Children Of Men sounds really interesting… and it sounds like my kind of reading. I'd originally reacted negatively to the trailer for the film, but I realize now that I probably got an absolutely wrong idea about the movie and the story it tells. - Good Sources For Info On Catholicism
If you're interested in the process of conversion to Catholicism, A Catholic Life has some good sources for information. I threw in a link or two of my own in the comments section.

I am suspicious of the claims that Mel Gibson made anti-Semitic remarks. I was watching "The Soup" on the "E" network last week and they mentioned how this site TMZ.com likes to "create news" about celebrities. For example, they cornered Paris Hilton and visibly upset her by pointing out all the negative trash in the comments section of one of her fan websites. They also showed footage of Woody Harrelson that must have gone a step farther than they usual paparazzi annoyances. Anyway, I think TMZ was the source for this stuff about Mel Gibson.
For a guy like Mel Gibson, a .12 blood alchohol level is probably enough to legally impair him, and maybe make him a little short-tempered, but I don't think it's enough to suddenly send him on an anti-Semitic rant.
Sincerely,
The Governor

Yeah, I am, too. I suppose it's possible that he did make anti-Semitic remarks, I just don't see how it would tie in to a DUI arrest. At the same time, I'm convinced that there's an anti-Mel-Gibson contingent out there who stand ready to accuse him of being a Jew hater every time he's in the spotlight. I'm sure they'll happily attach the phrase "…and he made anti-Semitic remarks!" onto any story about him, especially any negative one. Mel Gibson's new film suffers setbacks during production…"and he made anti-Semitic remarks!" Or Mel Gibson is suffering from the flu…"and he made anti-Semitic remarks!"
Besides the secularists, leftists, etc, who have political reasons for celebrating this terrible mistake on Gibson's part, I've been cruising the blogosphere and seeing that some Catholic bashing Fundamentalists and Evangelicals of all stripes are also celebrating Gibson's problems. Further evidence that denominationalism is just futile. Oh, well… I suppose that when your religious beliefs are founded on hatred, this is the kind of thing that you get off on.

Thanks for sending people my way Darrell. I think it's hilarious that people are already reading my blog and I still don't even know how to navigate the damn thing or get my fonts right. lol
Here's to hoping I get better.
Thanks again.

These guys on the right are giving him a hard time too.
I agree with you. The man apologized. He can and should be forgiven.

Why, what would make you think that? Notice who I was referencing: Catholic bashing Fundamentalists and Evangelicals ... if you don't fall in that category, you ain't got nothing to worry about. ;)

NH: I posted something none too complimentary about Gibson on my own blog.
Oh, yeah, I read that. I read that, I read your broad generalization of "95% of the Catholic Church," I read how you consider Gibson's terrible mistake to be confirmation of your negative opinion about "traditionalist Catholics"... and I chuckled and went on my merry way. I'm not going to bother arguing with stuff like that. It isn't worth my time. The only thing I remember reading in your post that I thought was worth commenting on was the tech toy part. On that I agreed totally. ;)
