Fahrenheit 9/11 in Retrospect
Thanks to Fedora Pundit for the tip on a nice NRO article on the ultimate effect of F911:
Fahrenheit 9/11 never had the sort of national appeal that its maker and its publicists claimed. The truth was just the opposite; deep inside the dense compilations of audience research figures that are used by movie studios to chart a film’s performance was evidence that Fahrenheit 9/11’s appeal was narrowly limited to those areas that were already solidly anti-Bush.Moore’s daily pronouncements about the movie’s success in pro-Bush areas, and the growing anti-Bush movement it was supposedly engendering, were little more than wishful thinking. In the end, Karl Rove was right. There was no need to worry.
I don't think I'll ever get tired of letting the air out of Michael Moore.

I tend to disagree. While it did not have much electoral impact it did engender doubt in the minds of some who do not have the knowledge to contextualize the messages. I have talked to a few soldiers who were very upset by the movie because they felt betrayed. I spoke a bit about the falsehoods and the realities of the situation, but the bottom line is it takes a lot of words to undo what a visual image, much less a motion picture, can accomplish.
You make a good point. I'm sure that, had Kerry been elected, Moore would have claimed that his film was the reason... and I'm glad he can't add "kingmaker" to his imaginary resume. Nonetheless, you're right... the film did have a negative impact that endures. Just the other day at work someone made reference to Bush's base of "haves and have-mores." I'm sure he heard that clip in F911 and doesn't know it's proper context; that the president was making a comic speech at a charity benefit and mocking his own exagerated image.
I think had John Kerry distanced himself from Fatty McFatperson, err...Michael Moore, instead of embrace him, he would have won the election.
