My Spider Senses Are Already Tingling

The poster above is the teaser poster for Spider-Man 3, which is still slated for a May 2007 release, according to the IMDB.

Of course, hard-core Spidey fans are all talking "black suit," and the official Spider-Man movie website confirms that it is, in fact, a black suit and not just a stylized black-and-white photo:

Under the picture on the Daily Bugle front page, there's the following information:

You may think you're looking at a black and white photo. Look closely. Spider-Man wears a black suit in Spider-Man 3.

Now, old-school comic book fans (like myself, and like MCF) might be a little happier if the black suit looked more like this fanboy mock-up, which actually recreates the black suit from the comics quite faithfully:

Still, I'll take what I can get. A blackened version of the classic suit is still kinda neat to see.

All of which leads to the larger question... is Venom confirmed as a villain in the third movie? Will Topher Grace, in fact, play him?

There's a lot of speculation going around the net... and, of course, there have been more than a few fake trailers and teasers out there. Some of them, in fact, have been very well done. This animated GIF is a fake trailer for the third movie, and it's decent looking, as home-made fakes go:

I found that at the Super Hero Hype boards.

Spend a few minutes at any search engine and you'll find a ton of "leaked" script synopsis ideas, set pictures, filming information, etc. Some of them seem to be fakes, even if they are pretty good fakes. Others seem more compelling. Some of the pictures I've seen really just might be leaked images from the film.

One website asserts that Peter will once again battle the Green Goblin, as the villain will return in the form of Harry Osborn, son of the original Green Goblin. I thought that was a far fetched idea until I saw this substantial-looking photo, supposedly leaked from a filming location.

Venom's appearance in the new film seems almost a sure thing, thanks to this leaked still of Topher Grace in costume.

And, most surprisingly, Venom will be teaming up with a villain thought dead at the end of Spider-Man 2. This photo of Venom and Doc Ock together is undeniable.

Regardless of the story line, I'll see Spider-Man 3. My hopes aren't that high... the second movie in the franchise was better than I'd ever have dreamed it would be, and a good film the third time out is almost certainly too much to hope for.

Nonetheless, May 2007 can't get here soon enough.

Comments:
I can't tell whether or not you're joking about Topher Grace playing venom.

Maybe Spidey wears black because he's going to a formal affair, like a wedding or a big charity gala.

Oh! Black Spidey suit! I see now. I think it looks really Batman-y. Or is that blasphemy?

Kristine: I think it looks really Batman-y. Or is that blasphemy?

I can't speak for all Spidey fans, but as for me, no, it's not blasphemy at all. Bats is the ONE AND ONLY DC character about whom I will abide a Spidey comparison.

I'll put it in Beer terms: DC is Budweiser... Marvel is Bass Pale Ale. Now, Bass isn't a super-cool, underground microbrew or anything, but it's always reliably delicious, and it makes Budweiser taste like sewer water.

How's that for a convoluted analogy?

Here's the Spider-Man 3 plot I expect: Crispen Grace (or whomever) will play Ben Riley, Peter Parker's cousin. (Ben became the Scarlet Spider in another storyline, but that's neither here nor there in terms of the movies... they can do what they want in the movies.) Harry Osborn, who hates Spider-Man because of Spidey having killed Harry's dad (the Green Goblin) found out at the end of Spider-Man 2 that Pete (his best friend) is Spider-Man. In an attempt to control him, Harry will pretend to be helping Pete and have Osborn Industries design a new techno-suit for Spider-Man. That suit will be the black one we see in the picture. Pete will wear it partly out of guilt, partly out of implied blackmail ("Wear the suit, Pete, or I'll expose your identity.") and partly out of plain old curiosity about the suit (Pete is a geek, after all). When the suit begins to take over, Pete will stop wearing it and Ben Riley, who is insanely jealous of Pete (I suppose) will begin wearing it and become Venom.

Now, this might qualify as blasphemy for hardcore Spidey fans, but I'd allow it as long as it's entertaining and sticks to the heart of the characters.

Why'd you get me started? ;)

About trilogies: Can you say Lord of the Rings?

I liked both Spider Man movies, so I look forward to the next one. I hope it doesn't disappoint.
The black suit is intriguing.

Isn't the black suit some sort of symbiotic alien?

After seeing the fan retouching, the movie version makes more sense, even though I liked the old Secret Wars costume with the big spider. And if it is a Symbiote, it might look like that over the red and blue suit, but take on a different look over Topher Brock...

That gif is sweet even if it is fake.

Did you play the recent Spider-Man game where you played both Spider-Man and Venom? Very fun game.

Happy Easter, Film Geeks! Now start posting to this blog again...=)

Oh Thank God, it's back! :)

I know you folks don't have time to update it as regularly, but it's still one of my favorites and it was scary when this site was coming up 404 for the last 3-4 days.

Wow before I saw this movie even before Venom was announced in the movie you could could tell in the TEASER trailer that its Venom (bell tower? duh) I mean I have never read the Magazines I read like 2 but I've watched the cartoons and thats how venom was born. I can believe no thought it was venom.
