Blog Party III: Top Five Heroes

It is Blog Party time again over at MCF's. This time the topic is heroes.

It has taken me a while to come up with this list. And my list is a bit unconventional, but I think it is still a good list. Here goes:

5. Commissioner Tony Scali: The Commish was one of my all time favorite TV shows. I never missed a single episode. If it comes on DVD, I will probably buy it. This was the first thing I ever saw Michael Chiklis in, and I loved him. He was a good guy, but he had problems just like everyone else. I just wish that more people had watched the show.

4. Mark Borchardt: American Movie is a wonderful documentary about a guy who sets out to make a horror movie. That guy is Mark Borchardt. So why is he a hero? Well he is a little crazy. Okay, he is really crazy, but he stands by his dream, and he makes his movie. You can't help but cheer for him. He is a hero in that he never lets anything get him down when it comes to making his movie. His movie, Coven, is awful, but it's his dream realized. You have to give him credit for going out there and achieving what he set out to do.

3. The Bride: The Bride is more of an antihero, but I still included her because she kicks butt. You cheer for her in the thrilling action scenes in Kill Bill Vol. 1. And then in Kill Bill Vol. 2 you get to see a whole new side of her, and once again you cheer for her. She sets out to kill Bill, and never lets anything get in her way.

2. Ghost Dog: Ghost Dog is another antihero, but he is such a wonderful character. He stands by his code from the beginning of Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai to the very end. That is what makes him heroic. In the face of danger, he doesn't let up on his beliefs. Also for him, loyalty is so important. One of his best friends doesn't speak a word of English, but that doesn't make a difference to Ghost Dog. What matters to him is that he can trust him. Ghost Dog has his back, and vice versa. Yes, Ghost Dog, like The Bride, is an assassin, but they still believe in what they are doing. That makes them heroes to themselves, and also to the viewer.

1. Marge Gunderson: Marge is one of the most real characters from any movie that I have ever seen. Fargo is also one of my all time favorite movies. What makes Marge so amazing is that she is so well grounded, intelligent, and innocent in the face of danger. She is a true hero. One of my favorite scenes in Fargo is when Marge goes to meet up with Mike Yanagita. That scene is one of the funniest and saddest scenes. That scene shows how sweet and wonderful Marge really is. It really helps the viewer to understand a little more about Marge. She is really just a good person. There aren't a lot of movies that have good people in them anymore. At least we have Marge.

Comments:
Ghost Dog rocks. Great list

Seriously...Ghost Dog...way to go! I like that you drew a parallel between Whitaker's Samurai and the Bride too...I was thinking of that movie when I saw the Kill Bill films. Great list indeed.

Marge Gunderson -- that's brilliant! I was wracking my brain trying to think of strong heroines; she was the best!

And the first two seasons of The Commish are on DVD. I saw it while perusing the TV section in Suncoast and came this close to buying it.
